How We Judge

The International Green Wine Competition is advised by Honorary Chairman Paul Dolan and judged under the direction of Head Judge Rebecca Murphy, founder of the Dallas Morning News Wine Competition, one of the nation's oldest and most respected wine competitioins. (www.dallaswinecomp.com)

Mr. Dolan, the author of True To Our Roots: Fermenting a Business Revolution, is widely recognized as the father of organic winemaking in the United States. Ms. Murphy, who is pursuing her M.W., is one of the most highly respected experts on wine competitions in the United States. We are honored to have their leadership.

Under their expert guidance:

  1. The judging will be conducted by panels of qualified tasters
  2. The judging will be held in Santa Rosa, CA on May 5, 2008
  3. All tasting is blind. Judges will not know the maker of the wines being judged.
  4. When there are fewer than three entries per category, the wines may be judged in different categories. Any placement in, or removal from, a category will be at the discretion of the Head Judge. Judging by vintage, price, region, etc. will be at the discretion of the Head Judge.
  5. If the judges are faced with an obviously flawed bottled of wine, no more than one additional bottle of the same entry will be opened and tasted.
  6. At the discretion of the white wine judging panels, the Head Judge may have the wines checked bya professional lab for residual sugar. White wines entered in "dry" categories must contain less than 0.3% residual sugar. Wines with more than 0.3% must list the percent on the entry form.
  7. If less than 0.3% residual sugar, please put NA (not applicable) or a dash (--) on the entry form.
  8. Please list residual sugar for red wines as well. Use NA or a dash (--) if RS is below 0.3%.

PLEASE NOTE: WE USE RESIDUAL SUGAR LEVELS TO DETERMINE THE ORDER IN WHICH YOUR WINE WILL BE JUDGED. IT IS IN YOUR OWN INTEREST TO INCLUDE THIS VITAL DATA TO ENSURE THAT YOUR WINE SHOWS TO ITS BEST ADVANTAGE. Every wine is judged on its own merit. Awards are given on a merit basis. The judges are instructed to grant no awards when, in their opinion, the wines are unworthy. They are empowered to grant duplicate awards if the qualify of wines so merit.
