Honorary Chairman:

Paul Dolan, Mendocino Wine Co.

Objective

In blind judging by leaders in the fields of Organic and Biodynamic(R) winemaking, this competition will identify outsstanding wines made from Demeter certified Biodynamic(tm), Organic, Transitional, and Naturally-farmed grapes. (See below for definitions.)

Winners will be awarded bronze, silver, and gold medals. Judges may confer Judges' Choice awards at their discretion.

Winners will be published online and distributed to the media in the Consumer's Green Wine Shopping List (TM).

Background

"Green" is an emerging (and explosive) consumer category for wine. Consumer thirst for "green" wine is unmistakable and demand is surging. Yet, at this stage in the market, there are many shades of green and great confusion among consumers as to what "green" really means when it comes to wine.

This competition uses "Green" as an unbrella term for the benefit of consumers who want to quickly identify great wines made using organic and biodynamic(tm) practices.

With the help of organic pioneer Paul Dolan, who serves as Honorary Chairman, and wine author and expert Elin McCoy, we have developed four classes for this competition.

These are something of a "work in progress" but attempt to set an intelligent starting point for organizing and judging this emerging class of wines. Above all, our goal is to help identify outstanding wines and educate consumers about them.

The Competition has established four Classes that are intended to encompass the full range of U.S. and International wines being made from Certified Organic, Biovin and Demeter certified Biodynamic grapes, grapes from Transitional vineyards, and Naturally-grown grapes (International imports only).

Please note: the definitions for these classes should be seen as a starting point as we are sure that there will be modifications made for future International Green Wine Competitions.

Winners of this competiton will be publicized in the Consumer's Green Wine Shopping List (tm). The List will be organized by class (see Official Rules for definitions) with full definitions to help consumers know exactly what they are getting when they buy a winning wine.

Competition Philosophy

It’s all about the grapes.

The first International Green Wine Competition will be limited to four Classes that will judge wines made from Biovin and Demeter certified Biodynamic(R) grapes, Certified Organic grapes, grapes grown in Transitional vineyards that are in the process of certification, and Naturally-grown grapes.  Naturally-grown grape entries are limited to International Imports.

In subsequent years, additional classes for organic wineries, etc., may be added.

Each wine will be judged on its individual merit and bronze, silver, gold, and Judges' Choice awards will be given at the sole discretion of the judges.

Under the leadership of Honorary Chairman Paul Dolan and the direction of Head Judge Rebecca Murphy, Founder of the Dallas Morning News Wine Competition, particular attention has been given to recruiting leaders in the Biodynamic (R) and Organic wine industries to judge this premier event.
